ASHRAE Releases Standard 224 - Standard for the Application of Building Information Modeling

December 1, 2023

For the past 5 years, a team of us (including volunteer ASHRAE voting members M. Dennis Knight, Marcus Fich, Roger Grant, Rob Hitchcock, Ernest Conrad, Craig R. Dubler., and Abe Morris) developed this ANSI Building Information Modeling (BIM) standard geared toward commercial building owners. While this standard does not involve the gbXML schema in any way (except for a mention of gbXML in the informative appendix), it should be of interest to the gbXML community.

Carmelsoft Awarded Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) BIM Research Contract

January 20, 2023

The SFPE Foundation, a charitable organization focused on enhancing the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the social, natural, and built environments, announces the funding of research into integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for the design, verification, and maintenance of proper fire protection systems in buildings.

The primary objective of the research is to identify opportunities to update and develop new fire protection engineering data repositories that are available to all interested parties, while also identifying interoperability requirements that will help more fire protection engineering software tools better integrate with BIM. In addition, the research aims to identify opportunities for improved toolsets and workflows that integrate with BIM, with the end goal of making it easier for all stakeholders to design, verify, and maintain proper fire safety systems in buildings. Findings of the study are expected to be presented at the SFPE Annual Conference & Expo in Washington DC/Bethesda, in October 2023.

BHoM from BuroHappold Integrates with gbXML

October 15, 2019

The BHoM (Buildings and Habitats object Model) is a collaborative computational development project for the built environment. It is a collective effort to share code and standardise the data that we use to design, everyday – across all activities and all disciplines.

The whole BHoM project uses an open-source model for project architecture, co-creation and planning. So explore, experiment and contribute to both the source code and the wiki. Sharing and building our code together in this open-source type approach means we can feed off and pool our disparate knowledge, experience and expertise towards a common goal – better design.

At the ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Atlanta, GA, representatives from gbXML and NREL will be discussing 3 different data exchange formats including gbXML, HPXML, and BuildingSync.

A representative from gbXML will give an overview of Green Building XML (gbXML). It is a free and open-source schema that allows building information modeling (BIM) authoring software to transfer its building information to other building analysis software tools. As BIM becomes more widely used, it is vital that information be easily shared between the various software applications from different vendors so that proper building analysis can be performed. gbXML's strength lies in its ability to accurately transfer 3D building geometry and thermal characteristics to be used by energy modeling, HVAC load calculation, and many other types of analysis software.

ASHRAE Announces Launch of As-Designed Portion of Building EQ Portal

March 31, 2018

ASHRAE has announced the launch of the As Designed portion of the Building EQ Portal that was developed by Carmel Software (the administrator of gbXML). Both the In Operation and As Designed evaluations are now available in the Building EQ Portal. The As Designed rating compares potential building energy use to the baseline performance of similar buildings using a simulated standardized energy use model:

1. Based on a building's physical characteristics and systems
2. Independent of occupancy and operating variables
3. Allows comparison of potential energy performance between buildings with very different operational and occupancy profiles
4. Identifies whether a building is achieving the full design potential as compared to actual energy performance as shown in the In Operation rating
5. Models only the candidate building for consistency between the two ratings
6. Applicable to both new and existing buildings.

Check out the live site here.

The ASHRAE Building EQ Portal Now Imports gbXML

January 22, 2018
